These darkening days as we head into Winter Solstice can be hard on creative people, who are keenly attuned to the rhythms of light throughout the day. We are profoundly aware that the sun is slipping further and further down the horizon, and each day is growing shorter. It can almost seem like the world we know is disintegrating.

As a writer, and as a Winter Solstice child, I am here to tell you that this is a good thing. It is the season of reassurance, as I was reminded this Sunday in a special Advent presentation through Turas d’Anam with Noirin ni Riain, Owen O’Suilleabhain and Micheal O’Suilleabhain. As we prepare for Winter Solstice, we know we soon will come to the day when a new light will be born. We are coming to the darkest and longest night of the year, at least for the Northern Hemisphere.
